Common Types of Massage

There are many different types of massage, including these common types:

  • Swedish massage. Swedish massage uses different styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking. Swedish massage is beneficial for reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis. Additionally, individuals with poor circulation often find relief.

  • Deep-tissue massage. Deep Tissue massage is best for relieving severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue. It focuses on the muscles located deeper down – below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for those who experience consistent pain, those who are subjected to heavy physical activity (athletes, construction workers as well as those who have sustained physical injury. After receiving Deep Tissue Massage, it’s normal to feel new muscle aches for a day or two. It’s important to realize that Deep Tissue Massage means different things to different people – what one person call ‘deep tissue’ another would consider ‘light’. For this reason, it’s important that you communicate with your therapist and let him or her know what you’re feeling and if you are uncomfortable.

  • Shiatsu massage. Shiatsu Massage is a Japanese developed massage that involves applying pressure with the thumbs, fingers and palms to the same energy meridians as done in acupressure. It also involves some stretching. Techniques used can include: rolling, brushing, vibrating, grasping or the therapist applying pressure with his or her feet on the client’s back, legs and feet.

  • Trigger point massage. This massage focuses on trigger points, or sensitive areas of tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse. This type of massage is often beneficial for relieving headaches and areas with chronic pain.

There are, of course many, many other forms of massage. If you’re really interested in learning more about them, you’ll get a good overview by going to Wikipedia and entering in the search term ‘massage’. However, unless you’re interested in becoming a massage therapist yourself, it might be a bit of a tedious read.
